De rustgevende geur van agarhout

Agarhout is geliefd vanwege de prettige en rustgevende geur. Onlangs ontdekten Chinese onderzoekers dat de geur het parasympatisch zenuwstelsel direct beïnvloedt.

De essentiële olie van agarhout is kostbaar, mede omdat deze moeilijk te verkrijgen is. De geur is heel bijzonder: uniek en aangenaam. Dit is de reden dat de etherische olie wereldwijd een grote culturele en religieuze betekenis gekregen en bijvoorbeeld wordt vermeld in de Sanskrit Vedas van India. Bij traditionele heilige vieringen in de oosterse geneeskunde wordt het al meer dan tweeduizend jaar gebruikt als wierook. Sommige mensen verbinden de geur van agarhoutwierook dan ook met kerst of de introspectie van midwinter.

Chinese onderzoekers bestudeerden de bijzondere etherische olie en kwamen tot de conclusie dat de geur sedatieve en hypnotische effecten sorteert. Het activeert het GABA systeem van ons parasympatisch zenuwstelsel en brengt zo rust. Veel gebruikte medicijnen zijn benzodiazepines, zij sorteren hun werking ook via effecten op het GABA-nerge systeem. Agarhout is een natuurlijke variant, werkt via haar geur en is niet verslavend (Wang et al., 2017).
